Exterior painting in Amsterdam: monuments and work on the street
According to the municipality, Amsterdam has almost 9,800 monuments and several protected cityscapes. For those monuments, ordinary maintenance needs no permit as long as material, form, detailing, profiles and colour stay the same, such as repainting woodwork in the same colour without stripping it; this holds only if consultation with the monument adviser shows that the structure and historic elements are not altered. For frames (kozijnen) of monuments set in solid brick walls, the city's Monuments Policy Framework 2026 (Beleidskader Monumenten 2026) requires a vapour-open paint system on the outside of the wooden parts. A rolling scaffold or waste container on the street can sometimes be reported free of charge, but in the Centrum district and on quays and bridges an object permit is always required. An object permit must be applied for at least 7 working days in advance.
