Moving company costs in the Netherlands

There is no reliable fixed price for every household move. Your quote depends on the volume of belongings, distance, access at both addresses and the help you book. Give several companies the same inventory and ask for written, itemised quotes. SkilledContractors is a marketplace; it does not carry out moves or set movers' rates.

A quote usually combines crew time, vehicle use and travel. A company may offer a fixed total or an hourly rate with a minimum booking. For either model, ask how many movers and vehicles are included and when chargeable time starts and ends. Check whether travel, fuel and VAT are inside the stated total. Packing supplies, packing service, storage and a furniture lift may be separate items; confirm them in writing.

For an hourly quote, write down agreed crew hours × the rate for the whole crew + vehicle and travel + selected extras + applicable VAT. With a fixed quote, replace the first items with the agreed total, but still check exclusions. Do not add an individual mover's rate to a van price without checking whether that price already includes staff. Ask how the load volume in cubic metres (m³) was assessed and how many trips the company expects. An estimate may change if the inventory changes.

A larger load can require a bigger van, more trips or more time. Stairs, narrow entrances, a long walk to the vehicle and limited parking affect loading. A furniture lift may save handling time but add rental and operator charges. Tell the company about heavy or fragile items before quoting so it can plan suitable people and equipment. Distance, traffic and the date also change the job. Another household's total is therefore a poor estimate for yours.

Consider a lightly furnished apartment moving within one city, with a usable lift at both addresses. Its inventory, route and loading work are easier to scope than a larger home with stairs and a storage room. The larger move may need more crew hours, another trip or furniture dismantling. This compares work, not prices: each needs its own quote. List contents by room, large furniture and any shed or storage space.

Tell the mover the floor level, the size of the building lift and the path from the front door to the van. A furniture lift is not needed for every apartment: ask who checks whether it can be placed and whether hire, operation and setup are included. Loading and parking rules vary by municipality and street. Check the current local rules and agree who arranges any permit. Ask for separate lines for packing, unpacking, dismantling, disposal and storage when relevant.

A low hourly rate can lead to a higher bill if the job takes longer. Compare team size, estimated hours, travel charges, any minimum and what happens if the move overruns. For a fixed quote, confirm the inventory, route, floors and included services, plus how changes will be charged. Ask about damage cover, excess and the claims process. Compare like for like rather than looking only at the headline amount.

Packing yourself can reduce paid labour, but takes your time and calls for suitable boxes and clear labels. Tell the company what you will do before it quotes. A full service move can include packing, transport, unpacking and furniture assembly; the package varies by provider. Flag valuable, fragile and heavy items in the inventory. Agree the scope and price of any extra service before work starts.

Share both addresses, your preferred date or time window, floor levels, lifts and parking access. Add an inventory and photos of awkward items or entrances. Request a breakdown of VAT, travel, materials, any minimum booking, lift hire, cover and changes to scope. Get written confirmation and read the terms before booking.
