Wall painting cost overview

Use this table for an early painting budget. The lowest rates normally assume large, smooth walls, limited masking and a similar colour. Small jobs can cost more per square metre because setup, travel and cleanup still take time.

Wall painting workIndicative Dutch priceTypical scope
Interior painter€35–€55 per hourSmall, detailed or uncertain work
Straightforward wall repaint€8–€16 per m²Stable surface, roller and limited preparation
Latex spraying€6–€14 per m²Large, empty and fully masked areas
Wall paint with extra preparation€15–€25 per m²Filling, sanding, primer or a strong colour change
Preparation-heavy wall system€25–€35+ per m²Damaged, porous or difficult surfaces
One feature wall€150–€450 totalSmall project, often affected by a minimum charge
Bedroom walls, about 30 m²€450–€900 totalTypical project range with setup and normal prep
Living-room walls, about 60 m²€900–€1,800 totalSeveral walls, labour and materials
Apartment walls, about 135 m²€2,000–€4,000 totalMulti-room project with normal preparation

The average cost is useful only when every quote covers the same work. One wall painter may include paint, primer and two coats. Another price may cover labour and one coat only. Ask whether the total painting charges include total labour and the cost of materials. Compare the total price and written scope, not only the headline rate.

Repainting a sound wall

A simple repaint means clean, stable wall surfaces in a similar colour. Minor filling may be included. The wall should not have active damp, loose plaster or extensive peeling paint.

This type of project is most likely to fall within €8 to €16 per square metre. A fresh coat of paint may be enough for a maintenance repaint, but the painter should confirm coverage before work starts.

Fresh painting and new plaster

Fresh painting on new plaster is different from repainting an existing coating. New plaster must be sufficiently dry, clean and stable. It may also absorb paint unevenly.

A suitable primer or diluted first layer may be required. Extra preparation and additional paint increase the cost of wall painting. There is no single safe waiting time for every plastered wall, so the surface must be assessed.

Wall-only scope

This guide covers interior vertical walls. It does not price a complete home interior, ceilings, doors, window frames or exterior walls as one combined job. Wall and ceiling paint also have different application and access requirements.

For broader interior painting costs, use the interior painting cost guide. Weather-exposed walls belong in the exterior painting cost guide.

Dutch units versus foreign calculators

Dutch painters normally quote per square metre, per hour or per project. An online paint cost calculator or paint calculator may use a price per litre, a price per square foot or square meter, gallons, or liters of paint. Search examples labelled “1000 sq ft” or “2BHK house” target other markets. Their estimated cost does not reflect Dutch labour, VAT or paint products.

Convert dimensions to metres and measure the actual wall surface. Floor area is not the same as total wall area. A useful calculator must use the size of the area in square metres, the paint price, coverage in litres of paint and the planned coats.

What affects the cost?

Wall condition, area, preparation, paint quality, colour and application method determine most of the final cost. Two rooms with the same floor area can have very different wall painting prices.

Wall area and room layout

Painters price the surface to be painted. A room with high walls, many corners or several narrow sections takes more time than one open wall of the same total area.

Doors and windows may be deducted from the measurement. However, cutting around them adds detail work. Ask how each wall area is calculated before comparing prices per square metre.

Condition of the surface

Smooth, stable walls are faster to prepare. Holes, cracks, stains, old adhesive, loose paint and damaged plaster increase labour cost. A textured wall can also require more paint because the coating must reach the relief.

Painting over active moisture does not solve the cause. Damp, mould or a leak should be investigated before applying paint. Major plaster repair is a separate trade and should be itemised.

Cleaning, filling and sanding

Interior walls may need dust removal, cleaning or degreasing. Kitchens and frequently touched areas can hold grease that affects paint adhesion. Small holes are filled and rough edges are sanded before the finish is applied.

Ask what level of preparation the price includes. “Ready to paint” should not be assumed when the quote was based only on distant photos.

Primer and paint adhesion

Primer may be needed on porous plaster, bare repairs, stains or a surface with uneven absorption. It can improve adhesion and reduce patchy colour. The correct product depends on the wall and old coating.

Primer is not automatically required on every sound painted wall. A written quote should state where it will be used and whether its cost is included.

One, two or three coats

One coat can suit a maintenance repaint in a similar colour. 2 coats of paint are common when the colour changes or a uniform finish is needed. A very dark-to-light change, porous wall or weak coverage may require an extra coat.

The painting quotation should state the planned number of coats. It should also explain how the price changes if another coat becomes necessary.

Type and quality of paint

The type of paint you choose affects material cost, coverage and cleaning resistance. Standard matt wall paint can suit quiet rooms. Washable interior paint may be preferable in halls, kitchens or family spaces. Bathrooms require a suitable system and good ventilation.

High-quality paint can cost more, but product quality alone does not guarantee a good paint job. The best type of paint is the one that suits the room and substrate. Surface preparation and correct application remain essential. Ask for the product, colour code and sheen on the quote, so the kind of paint and paint chosen are clear.

Colour and finish

A strong paint colour, feature wall or precise boundary between colours can increase cutting-in time. Dark colours can show roller marks or surface defects. Very matt paint and higher-sheen finishes also react differently to light and wall quality.

A sample area can reduce the risk of choosing the wrong colour. Confirm whether samples and colour consultation are included.

Furniture, masking and access

An empty room is faster to protect than an occupied room. Furniture movement, removal of wall items, daily setup and detailed masking add labour. High walls and stairwells may need specialist indoor access equipment.

Agree who removes curtains, shelves, sockets covers and pictures. Electrical fittings should be handled safely and within the provider's competence.

Hourly rate, price per square metre or project price?

Wall painters use hourly rates, per-m² prices and fixed totals. The right model depends on how predictable the scope is.

Hourly rate

An interior painter often charges €35 to €55 per hour. Hourly pricing can work for one small wall, touch-ups or uncertain repair work.

Ask for the estimated hours and minimum charge. Confirm whether paint, filler, tape, protective film, travel, parking, disposal and VAT are extra. A low hourly rate does not always mean a low total cost.

Price per square metre

A per-m² price works well for large, repeatable wall surfaces. Straightforward rolling is often €8 to €16 per m². Latex spraying can be around €6 to €14 per m² when the space is suitable.

Confirm the measured total area, preparation, primer, coat count, materials and VAT. A price for applying paint to ready walls cannot be compared with a rate that includes repair-heavy preparation.

Fixed project price

A fixed price can be clearest for a room or multi-room painting project. It should name every wall, colour, paint product, repair allowance, application method, number of layers and exclusion.

Hidden damage may still lead to agreed additional work. Require the provider to describe the issue and give a price before continuing outside the original scope.

Guide price and additional work

A Dutch guide price is an estimate, not a fixed sum. ACM ConsuWijzer explains that the final amount should generally not exceed a guide price by more than 10% without a timely warning and the customer's consent.

Keep changes in writing. This is especially useful when old wallpaper, weak plaster or peeling paint becomes visible after preparation begins.

How to calculate wall painting cost

Measure the width and height of each wall. Multiply them, add the wall areas and subtract only the openings that the painter also excludes. Then multiply the agreed wall area by the relevant rate.

For example, 30 m² × €8 to €16 gives €240 to €480 for a simple per-m² calculation. Use this to estimate your painting cost, not as a guaranteed offer. The actual cost might be higher after a minimum charge, masking, repairs, primer, materials or VAT.

To estimate how much paint you need, use the product's coverage per litre and multiply by the number of coats. This helps calculate the cost of material, but the amount you should expect to pay also includes labour and setup. Rough or porous walls can require more paint. The label and technical data sheet should guide the calculation.

Example wall painting prices

The following examples help build a budget. They are indicative project ranges, not offers. Wall dimensions and preparation matter more than the room name.

One wall or accent wall

Painting a single feature wall might cost around €150 to €450 as a small project. A per-m² calculation alone can look lower, but minimum labour, travel, masking and cleanup still apply.

An accent wall with a strong colour or a sharp boundary may need more careful cutting-in. Decorative effects, limewash, concrete-look finishes and a hand-painted mural are separate scopes.

Bedroom walls

About 30 m² of bedroom walls may cost €450 to €900 as a typical quoted project. Sound walls, an empty room and one colour are cheaper than filled rooms, repairs or a strong colour change.

This example excludes the ceiling, door and frames unless the quotation lists them.

Living-room walls

About 60 m² of living-room walls may cost €900 to €1,800. Open walls can be efficient, while large windows, radiators, fixed cabinets and several colours add detailed work.

Moving and protecting furniture can also raise the cost to paint walls in an occupied living room.

Apartment walls

Painting about 135 m² of walls across an apartment may cost €2,000 to €4,000. An empty apartment with one paint type can be easier to spray or roll as one project.

Do not confuse 135 m² of paintable wall with 135 m² of floor area. Measure the interior walls room by room.

Simple 100 m² calculation

At €8 to €16 per m², 100 m² of straightforward wall painting gives €800 to €1,600. At €25 to €35 per m², preparation-heavy work gives €2,500 to €3,500.

This calculation shows why the condition of your walls matters. The final cost may vary when primer, extra coats, masking, repair or minimum charges are added.

DIY or professional wall painting

DIY can cost less for one accessible wall in good condition. Include paint and supplies, tools, filler, sandpaper, protection and your time. Mistakes can add new paint and correction work.

Hiring a professional can be more practical when painting your home, especially with new plaster, damaged walls, high spaces or an entire house. Compare the overall painting project cost, planned finish and time to paint rather than labour alone.

What is included?

A standard wall painting service may include:

  • inspection and measurement of the agreed walls;
  • protection of floors, furniture and nearby fittings;
  • light cleaning or degreasing where stated;
  • filling small holes and light sanding;
  • spot primer or full primer where specified;
  • the agreed paint and normal supplies when listed;
  • cutting-in, rolling or spraying;
  • the agreed number of finish coats;
  • normal touch-ups and cleanup of the work area.

Check the paint specification

The quote should name the type of wall paint, product or equivalent quality level, sheen, colour code and estimated litres of paint. It should state whether the painter supplies the paint and materials.

Ask how stains, bare filler and existing peeling paint will be treated. The process should ensure the paint adheres correctly to the prepared wall surface.

Check protection and application

Rolling needs floor and edge protection. Spraying needs much more masking because fine paint can travel beyond the wall. Confirm how furniture, windows, radiators, switches and adjoining rooms will be protected.

The quote should also state whether the painter uses a roller, brush or spray system. A lower spray rate is not useful if masking and occupied-room setup are excluded.

Schedule and handover

A small room can sometimes be completed within one or two working days. Repairs, primer, coats and drying time can extend the schedule. Dry-to-touch time is not the same as full curing.

Inspect the agreed walls in normal daylight after the planned finish has dried. Record any follow-up item covered by the provider's written terms. SkilledContractors does not guarantee timing, workmanship, durability or aftercare.

A basic wall painting price may exclude:

  • ceiling painting;
  • doors, window frames, trim and skirting boards;
  • wallpaper removal and adhesive cleanup;
  • extensive stripping of old paint;
  • plastering, drywall repair or wall straightening;
  • treatment of active damp, mould or leaks;
  • specialist stain, lead or asbestos remediation;
  • heavy furniture removal or storage;
  • electrical, carpentry or demolition work;
  • specialist access equipment;
  • parking, travel or waste charges not listed;
  • decorative murals or specialist paint effects.

Keep neighbouring cost intents separate

This page answers the standalone cost to paint walls. It does not replace the broader painter cost guide or the full interior house painting cost guide.

Ceiling-only, door, window-frame, wallpapering and stair painting costs require their own measurements. A ceiling paint quote should not be merged into a wall-only rate. Exterior masonry and woodwork belong to the exterior painting cost guide.

Repair before painting

Paint will not flatten an uneven wall or stop an active leak. Large cracks, loose plaster and moisture sources should be assessed first. Ask for repair and painting to appear as separate lines when different work is required.

Saving tips

Useful savings come from reducing avoidable setup and comparing the same scope. Removing necessary primer or repair can create a cheaper initial quote but a weaker finish.

Combine several walls

A painter can spread travel, masking and cleanup across a larger area. Combining compatible rooms may reduce the cost per square metre.

Keep wall-only pricing separate from optional ceilings and woodwork. This lets you decide which items to add.

Clear the room

Remove pictures, small furniture and personal items when agreed. Give the painter safe access to every wall. Do not remove electrical fittings unless you are qualified to do so.

Use fewer colours

One paint colour and sheen across several walls can reduce cutting-in, cleaning and leftover material. Finalise the colour before the start date to avoid unused paint and return trips.

Share useful photos and measurements

Send full-wall photos plus close-ups of cracks, stains and old coatings. Include height, width, wall material, colour change and access limits. Photos improve an early estimate but do not reveal every hidden defect.

Compare like-for-like quotes

Compare wall area, preparation, repairs, primer, paint product, number of coats, application method, labour, materials, VAT and cleanup. A low rate with many exclusions may produce a higher final price.

Buy paint only by agreement

Buying wall paint yourself can reduce a material markup, but it can also create responsibility for the wrong product or insufficient quantity. Agree on the exact product, paint price and litres before buying anything.

Local costs, VAT and additional charges

Location can affect parking, travel time and provider availability. Wall condition and project size normally cause a larger difference than the city name alone.

Travel, parking and minimum charges

Ask whether travel, call-out cost, paid parking or a small-job minimum is included. These charges matter most when painting one wall. A larger project can spread the setup cost over more square metres.

Do not assume a national painter rate applies equally in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and smaller towns. Compare local written quotes for the same scope.

VAT on wall painting

The Dutch Tax Administration states that painting a qualifying home older than two years can fall under the 9% VAT rate. This can cover materials, preparation, pre-treatment, varnishing and staining that form part of the painting service. Work too far removed from painting can fall under 21% VAT.

Check the current Belastingdienst rules for VAT on painting. Ask the provider to state the VAT rate on each part. Do not assume that major plaster repair or replacement work qualifies for 9%.

Rental homes

The Dutch government's maintenance overview lists whitening or painting interior walls and ceilings among the tenant's usual minor maintenance responsibilities. Filling small holes and shrinkage cracks is also generally assigned to the tenant.

Check your lease and get permission before making a strong colour change. The landlord may set handover conditions. See the Rijksoverheid rental-maintenance overview.

The official ACM quote-comparison checklist recommends comparing the work description, price agreement, timing, terms and extra charges. For wall painting, check:

  • rooms and measured wall area;
  • repairs, cleaning and sanding;
  • primer, paint, sheen and colours;
  • application method and number of coats;
  • labour, materials and VAT;
  • travel, parking and minimum charges;
  • protection, cleanup and waste;
  • start date, duration and payment schedule;
  • procedure for changes and additional work;
  • provider warranty terms and quote validity.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions.

How much does wall painting cost in the Netherlands?

Straightforward interior wall painting usually costs €8 to €16 per m². Latex spraying can cost €6 to €14 per m², while extensive preparation can raise the rate to €25 to €35 per m² or more.

What is the average cost of painting one wall?

A single feature wall may cost about €150 to €450 as a small project. The wall area, minimum charge, preparation, paint and number of coats determine the total.

How much does it cost to repaint an entire wall?

Multiply the measured wall area by €8 to €16 per m² for a simple repaint, then add any minimum charge, repairs, primer, paint or VAT not included. A 15 m² wall gives a basic area calculation of €120 to €240 before those additions.

How much does it cost to paint bedroom walls?

About 30 m² of bedroom walls may cost €450 to €900 as a typical project range. Confirm whether this includes preparation, materials and two coats. The ceiling and woodwork are separate unless listed.

What does a wall painter charge per hour?

An interior painter commonly charges €35 to €55 per hour. Ask for the expected hours and whether travel, materials, minimum charges and VAT are included.

Is latex spraying cheaper than rolling?

It can be cheaper on large, empty and uniform areas. Indicative spraying rates are €6 to €14 per m², compared with €8 to €16 per m² for straightforward rolling. Extensive masking can remove the saving in a small occupied room.

How many coats of wall paint are needed?

One coat may suit a similar-colour maintenance repaint. Two coats are common for a colour change or an even finish. Porous new plaster, strong colours and stains may also need primer or an extra coat.

Is primer included in wall painting cost?

Only when the written quote says so. Ask where primer is needed, which product will be used and whether labour and materials are included in the price.

How long does it take to paint walls in one room?

A simple room may take one to two working days, including preparation and coats. Repairs, drying periods, several colours and occupied-room setup can extend the schedule.

Can a painter paint over wallpaper?

Sometimes, if the wallpaper is firmly bonded, dry and suitable for coating. Seams and texture can remain visible, while loose paper or bubbles can fail under new paint. Ask the painter to assess it first.

Is DIY wall painting cheaper?

DIY usually reduces labour cost for a small, accessible project. Include tools, masking, filler, primer, paint, waste and your time. Professional help can be more practical for damaged or high walls.

Does the 9% VAT rate apply to wall painting?

It can apply when the home qualifies under the older-than-two-years rule. Painting materials and related preparation may also qualify, while work too far removed from painting may be taxed at 21%. Ask for VAT to be itemised.

What should a wall painting quotation include?

It should list wall area, preparation, repair allowance, primer, paint product, finish, colours, number of coats, labour, materials, protection, cleanup, VAT and extra-charge procedure.

Compare quotes

Describe each room, measured wall area, current condition, existing and desired colour, paint finish, access and furniture. Add clear photos but allow providers to inspect uncertain surfaces. This helps providers calculate the cost of painting the walls without confusing wall area with floor area. Compare painting services and review the painter cost guide before accepting a scope. Compare preparation, coating system, coat count, materials, VAT and exclusions rather than choosing only the lowest price. SkilledContractors is a comparison platform. It helps customers describe work and compare responses from independent providers. SkilledContractors does not perform the painting, set the final price or guarantee availability, timing, workmanship or results.
