Water Pipe Installation and Replacement Cost in the Netherlands: 2026 Prices

Water pipe installation in the Netherlands is quoted per project: usually €300 to €500 for a short accessible pipe run and €600 to €1,200 for a longer or concealed installation. Where a plumber works by the hour, the reference rate for planned daytime work is €45 to €85 per hour. Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none. The final price depends on pipe length, material, access, the number of connections and whether walls or floors must be opened.

Pipe installation cost overview

The table below gives the reference rates a plumber charges for pipe work. Pipe installation itself is priced per project, so the project figures underneath are market context rather than fixed rates.

Type of workIndicative price (excluding VAT)
Plumber labour, planned daytime work€45–€85 per hour
Call-out fee (where charged)€20–€40 per visit
Minimum charge per visit€60–€120 per visit
Washing-machine connection (connection points present)€60–€125 per job
Dishwasher connection (connection points present)€75–€200 per job

Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none. The range is indicative: it is not an offer, not a guaranteed price, it does not set your budget and it does not bind a contractor. Your quote may be lower or higher.

Pipe installation, relocation and replacement have no fixed reference rate. The figures below are Dutch market observations, checked in August 2026, and each job is quoted per project after a survey:

  • Short accessible water line up to about 1.5 m: around €300 to €500.
  • Longer or partly concealed water line: around €600 to €1,200.
  • Kitchen water-line installation or relocation, limited scope: around €200 to €700.
  • Bathroom water-line installation or relocation, limited scope: around €250 to €1,200.
  • New washing-machine or dishwasher water supply point where none exists: around €180 to €450.
  • Outside tap with a short supply line: around €150 to €400.
  • Shut-off valve installation or replacement: around €80 to €200.
  • Concealing pipes below a floor or in a wall: around €100 to €300 extra before restoration.
  • Partial or whole-home internal pipe replacement: from around €1,500 to €10,000 or more.

These are not national tariffs. A short project can have a high cost per metre because travel, setup, fittings and testing are fixed costs. Whole-home repiping has a wide range because access and surface restoration dominate the total cost.

Water line costs and replacement scope

Water line costs are lowest when the route is short and accessible. The average cost per project rises when the plumber must open finished surfaces or create several connections. The cost of replacing a water supply pipe also depends on whether the existing pipe can remain safely out of use.

New water pipes versus pipe replacement

A new installation adds a cold-water or hot-water line where no suitable connection exists. Water line installation can create a branch from an existing pipe or a longer new route. Common projects include a kitchen position, washing-machine connection, outside tap or bathroom fixture.

Water pipe replacement removes or bypasses an old pipe and installs a new pipe. Replacement may be needed because of corrosion, lead, repeated leaks or an unsuitable route. Concealed pipework and complete repiping cost more than a short accessible branch.

Water-supply pipes are not drain pipes

This guide covers pressurised drinking-water pipes that carry cold or hot water to taps and appliances. Wastewater pipes carry used water away and use different diameters, materials and installation rules.

PVC or PP may be used for drains, but not every plastic pipe is suitable for drinking water. Gas pipes and central-heating pipes have a different scope.

Is a price per metre useful?

A price per metre can help with a long simple route. It is less useful for small water line projects. The total cost also depends on bends, fittings, drilling, valves, connection points, pressure testing and surface restoration.

Ask for a project price rather than multiplying a material price by the length of the pipe. This applies to lead pipe replacement too: it is quoted per project, not per metre.

What affects the cost?

The main water pipe installation cost factors are access, route, pipe material, diameter and the number of outlets.

Accessible or concealed pipework

An exposed pipe in a utility room is faster to install than one hidden below a floor or inside a tiled wall. Concealed pipework can require wall chasing, lifting floors, crawl-space access, protective sleeves and later plaster, tile or floor repair.

Separate plumbing from finishing work in the quote.

Short line or complete repiping

A short branch may take a few hours. Replacing water pipes across a home requires several routes, outlets and shutoffs.

A complete project can include the line after the water meter, kitchen and bathroom branches, hot-water distribution, appliance connections, valves, testing and restoration. It can take several days.

When should water pipes be replaced?

Consider pipe replacement when lead water pipes are present, corrosion affects a longer section, leaks repeat, the existing pipe is damaged in several places or the installation causes low water pressure.

One failed fitting or valve may only need repair. Ask the plumber to explain why replacement is more suitable than a local repair.

Cold-water and hot-water lines

A single cold-water line is simpler than a paired hot-and-cold installation. Hot-water lines may need insulation.

Pipe diameter, expected flow and the length of the pipe should suit the outlets. An undersized pipe can cause poor flow when several taps are used.

Fittings and connections

The pipe is only part of the material cost and overall cost. Elbows, tees, reducers, valves, wall plates and connection fittings add time and money.

A route with fewer fittings can be simpler, although the shortest route is not always the most practical.

Wall, floor and finishing work

A plumbing quote may end after installation and testing. Closing a wall, replacing tiles, plastering, painting, cabinet work and floor restoration may be excluded.

Ask who completes each stage and whether the new pipe must remain visible until testing is finished.

Types of water pipes and material cost

The plumber may propose copper, multilayer pipe or another certified plastic system for water supply pipes.

Copper pipe is rigid and widely used for hot and cold water. Labour can rise when many bends or difficult connections are needed.

Multilayer pipe combines plastic and metal layers. It is flexible and can reduce joints on a curved route, but needs compatible press fittings and tools.

Certified plastic water pipe must be suitable for drinking water. Drainage pipe must not be substituted. Products in contact with drinking water must meet Dutch hygienic and functional requirements.

No material is always best. Temperature, pressure, fittings, route and the existing installation matter.

Lead pipes in older homes

Homes built before 1960 can still contain lead water pipes. Lead in drinking water is harmful, and official Dutch guidance advises replacement.

A water test costs about €50. Lead pipe replacement is quoted per project and there is no reliable price per metre. An accessible section of lead pipe may cost much less than concealed whole-home replacement, so ask for a project quote after a survey.

The building owner is responsible from the water meter into the property. The water company is responsible from the meter towards the street. In a rental home, the landlord is responsible for internal lead pipes. Do not assume a subsidy is available.

Internal pipes versus the main water line

This guide focuses on internal supply pipes after the water meter. A main water line or service line outside the private installation may fall under one of the Dutch water companies. The main water line replacement cost is therefore not automatically part of a domestic plumber quote.

Before replacing a main water line or the water line from the street, confirm the responsibility boundary. Main water pipe replacement and internal pipe installation are different projects.

Hourly rate, fixed price or project price?

The right price model depends on how clearly the route and scope can be inspected.

Hourly rate

An hourly rate can suit a small adjustment or uncertain old pipework. The reference range for planned daytime labour is €45 to €85 per hour. Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none.

Ask for:

  • the hourly labour rate;
  • minimum charge;
  • call-out fee;
  • estimated hours;
  • material markup;
  • parking;
  • VAT;
  • approval before extra time.

Fixed price and project price

A fixed price suits a defined connection such as an outside tap or washing-machine water supply. It should identify:

  • the start and end points;
  • pipe material and diameter;
  • fittings;
  • visible or concealed route;
  • testing;
  • opening work;
  • restoration;
  • exclusions.

Project price

A project price suits kitchen rerouting, bathroom pipework or whole-home replacement. Separate plumbing installation, removal of old pipes, opening walls or floors, pressure testing and surface restoration.

Materials and labour

Ask for labour and materials separately. The cheapest pipe material does not always create the lowest installation cost because tooling, fittings, connection method and access also matter.

Example prices

These project figures are Dutch market context, excluding VAT. Each one is quoted per project rather than set by a fixed rate.

Short accessible water line

A short cold-water branch up to about 1.5 metres may cost €300 to €500 with normal labour and materials. This assumes easy access, a nearby supply point and no major repair.

Longer concealed water line

A longer water line in a wall or below a floor may cost €600 to €1,200. Extensive opening or restoration can raise the cost.

Kitchen water pipes

Installing or moving kitchen water lines may cost €200 to €700 for a limited scope. Several appliance outlets, cabinet work or long routes can cost more.

Kitchen pipework has no fixed reference rate; it is quoted per project after a survey.

Bathroom water pipes

A limited bathroom project may cost €250 to €1,200. Several hot-and-cold connections, concealed pipework and tile restoration raise the price.

Bathroom pipework has no fixed reference rate; it is quoted per project. A complete room renovation is separate.

Washing-machine connection

Connecting a washing machine where the water and drain points already exist has a reference range of €60 to €125, excluding VAT.

Creating a new supply point is separate work. It may cost €180 to €450 when a cold-water line is nearby. A new drain, electrical work and floor drilling are separate.

Dishwasher connection

Connecting a dishwasher to existing points has a reference range of €75 to €200, excluding VAT.

A new valve or supply branch is separate work and may cost €100 to €350 for the plumbing scope.

Outside tap

An outside tap with a short water line often costs €150 to €400. Wall thickness, pipe length, insulation, frost protection and an internal shut-off arrangement affect the price.

Shut-off valve

A normal shut-off valve may cost €80 to €200. A main water shut-off valve can cost more when the existing pipe is damaged or difficult to isolate.

Partial or whole-home replacement

The water pipe replacement cost for several internal lines can start around €1,500. Concealed whole-home repiping can reach €10,000 or more.

A survey is essential and the work is quoted per project.

What is included?

A standard installation may include:

  • route inspection;
  • shutting off water;
  • cutting and preparing pipe;
  • fitting connectors and valves;
  • securing the pipe;
  • connecting outlets;
  • pressure testing;
  • flushing;
  • checking water flow;
  • checking for leaks;
  • basic cleanup.

How water line installation works

The plumber identifies the route and isolates the water. The new pipe is measured, cut and connected with compatible fittings.

The provider secures the line, connects the outlet, restores water pressure and tests the completed section. Installing a water pipe behind a wall should be tested before the surface is closed.

Pressure testing and flushing

The installation should be tested before surfaces are closed. New lines should be flushed before use.

Ask what test is performed and whether results are recorded.

Pipe insulation

Hot-water lines and pipes in cold spaces may need insulation. Outside-tap pipework may need frost protection or a drain-down method.

Removal of old pipes

Old pipe removal is not always necessary. The quote should state whether old pipes and waste are removed.

What is not included?

A basic installation price often excludes:

  • drain or sewer installation;
  • gas pipework;
  • central-heating redesign;
  • active leak detection;
  • water-damage repair;
  • complete renovations;
  • electrical work;
  • asbestos work;
  • municipal network work;
  • demolition;
  • plastering, tiling or painting;
  • floor repair;
  • emergency surcharges;
  • guarantees about completion or leak-free performance.

Leak repair is separate

This guide covers planned installation, replacement and relocation. An active leak may need diagnosis and urgent repair first.

Drain, sewer and gas work are different

A water supply line carries pressurised clean water. Drains carry wastewater. Gas-line work has a separate safety and regulatory scope.

Fixture installation can be separate

The new water line may end at an isolation valve. Installing a toilet, tap, sink or radiator can be a separate item.

Saving tips

Keep the route short and accessible

A direct accessible route usually needs less labour and surface repair. Exposed pipework in a cupboard may be acceptable.

Combine nearby connections

Adding a washing-machine valve and outside-tap branch during one visit can reduce travel and setup costs.

Send photos and a simple plan

Show start and end points, distances, wall and floor type, the water meter, current pipes, fixture locations and access.

Confirm materials before work

Ask for the pipe system, fittings and drinking-water suitability in the quote. Do not buy parts until the installer confirms compatibility.

Reuse safe existing pipes where possible

An existing pipe may be reused when its material, condition, diameter and route are suitable. Reuse should follow inspection rather than assumption.

Compare quotes on the same VAT basis

Ask whether each quote is stated excluding VAT and whether the contractor charges VAT at all. A contractor using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none, so two quotes can look different for that reason alone.

Can I install water pipes myself?

Altering fixed drinking-water pipes can cause leaks, contamination, poor flow and hidden damage.

Hire a professional when pipework is concealed, several outlets are involved, lead pipes are present or the building is shared or rented.

Local costs and call-out charges

Large Dutch cities

Parking and access can raise costs in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. The reference range for a call-out fee, where it is charged, is €20 to €40 per visit, excluding VAT, but providers set their own rates.

Rental property

Major renewal of fixed installations is generally a landlord responsibility, while tenants handle smaller daily tasks. Report unsafe, old or leaking pipes before ordering major work.

Apartment and VvE

An apartment pipe can connect to a shared riser. The VvE or property manager may need to approve shutoffs and work in communal structures.

Water company responsibility

The water company manages the public supply and service line to the responsibility boundary. Internal pipework after the meter normally belongs to the building owner.

Ask the water company when the problem may be outside the private installation.

VAT

Where VAT is charged, plumbing and installation labour falls under the standard Dutch rate of 21%. The reduced 9% rate covers work such as insulating, painting, plastering and wallpapering in homes older than two years, and it does not cover pipe installation.

Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions.

How much does water pipe installation cost?

A short accessible water line is usually around €300 to €500. A longer concealed route may cost €600 to €1,200 or more. Pipe installation has no fixed rate, so both figures are market context and the work is quoted per project.

What does a plumber charge per hour?

The reference range for planned daytime plumbing labour is €45 to €85 per hour. Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none. Travel and materials are usually charged separately.

What does water supply pipe replacement cost?

A small accessible replacement can cost several hundred euros. Replacing several internal lines can start around €1,500, while concealed whole-home work can reach €10,000 or more. Replacement is quoted per project after a survey.

How much does it cost to install a new water line?

The cost to install a new water line starts around €300 to €500 for a short accessible route, and longer routes and several outlets cost more. Pipe installation has no approved reference rate, so this is Dutch market context and each job is quoted per project after a survey.

How long does installation take?

A short line can take a few hours. A room reroute may take a day. Whole-home replacement can take several days plus restoration.

Is copper or multilayer pipe cheaper?

Material price is only one factor. Compare the complete installed price, fittings and labour.

Can plastic pipe be used for drinking water?

Yes, when the system is certified and suitable for drinking water. Drainage PVC is not a drinking-water pipe.

Does the pipe need pressure testing?

Yes. Ask for testing before a wall or floor is closed.

What does an outside tap cost?

A standard outside tap with a short line often costs €150 to €400, excluding VAT. That figure is Dutch market context rather than a reference rate: the work is quoted per project.

What does a washing-machine connection cost?

Connecting a washing machine where the water and drain points already exist has a reference range of €60 to €125, excluding VAT. Creating a new supply point is separate work and may cost €180 to €450 when the current supply is close. Drainage and electricity may be separate.

Who pays for lead-pipe replacement?

The owner is responsible from the meter into the property. The water company is responsible towards the street. A tenant should contact the landlord. The work is quoted per project, not per metre.

Can water pipes be replaced without breaking walls?

Sometimes a new route can use a crawl space, cupboard or surface channel. Hidden pipes cannot always be removed without opening surfaces.

Can an existing pipe be reused?

Sometimes. The plumber should inspect the material, condition, diameter and route before deciding.

What is the main water line replacement cost?

The main water line replacement cost is not part of a normal internal-pipe quote when the affected section belongs to the water company. Confirm ownership and the responsibility boundary first.

What should a quote include?

It should list route, material, diameter, fittings, valves, labour, opening work, testing, restoration, travel, the VAT basis and approval for extra work. Amounts exclude VAT. Whether VAT is added depends on the contractor: one using the small-business scheme (KOR) charges none.
